I love writing--It's my joy, my therapy--my confession. I'm a performer, dancer, yoga and meditation instructor, write a poetry column for Rafu Shimpo. Growth and love of life is a key to my happiness. View more posts

So sorry about your dad. My dad also got hooked when he was in the Navy. He finally quit in his early 40s. Later became a marathon runner until he was in his early 60s. He passed last year at 92 from Covid complications. Sometimes there is no fairness in endings. But there are many ways to rise above it. Writing is one way. Really loved your poem.

Yes, indeed. I was a closet smoker because I was a fitness instructor and my husband hated smokers. So fortunately I couldn’t smoke out in the open too much. But still it was so hard to quit. Harder than quitting hard drugs as I am told.

My father got hooked in combat WW2. Cigarettes along with chocolate and beer were rations. I watched him die on breathing support in the hospital. For two months unable to talk or move — he died of emphysema.
